Homework: SS IXL I.2 "Classical Athens: Government and Culture"
You are amazed by the differences between Sparta and Athens. The Athenians are very civilized people you think; however, they still use slaves. The fact they invented a government where every citizen can participate and not a few people is pretty amazing! You also think it is interesting that a society which seems to have many rights for its citizens, is so backward in how it treats women.

Daneus: "The Spartans are invading! We need to get to the Acropolis for shelter! Please, come with me!"
You follow Daneus out of his home. All around are Athenians who are very scared and flustered heading for the Acropolis. You see Pericles in the middle of the walkway yelling at people and directing them up the hill. You follow Daneus and the rest of the Athenians up the hill. You stop to ask a few questions.
You: "Why don't you stay and fight?" You wonder as you try to catch your breath.
Daneus: "Pericles is in charge of our military. He told us we cannot take on the Spartans. We've expected this for some time. We are safe on top of the Acropolis. We have walls around the city to protect us."
You: "I thought you guys were allies at some point? What happened?" You ask remembering the story Pericles told you yesterday about the Persian Wars. You still are curious about that war. Maybe you can find time to ask about that later.
Daneus: "We are only allies against the Persians. The Spartans are jealous of our wealth and great city! They are savages!"
You can't help but agree with Daneus about the Spartans. They seemed pretty terrible to you as well. After realizing you will be stuck up on this hill for some time. You meet a family and begin to speak to them. They tell you their story.
